Happy Halloween!
My little Ironman had a great time trick or treating! Lila was not dressed up, but we were pretty excited she didn't figure out how to take her hat off. Halloween night was a COLD affair, so Lila was bundled up in layers and in her stroller-sleeping bag.
This year Hayden was really good about going up to the door, saying "trick or treat" and saying thank you. Until we got to a few houses with really great decorations and special effects. Then he got a little stressed out. But all in all, it was good. Lila was content to eat Cheerios in the stroller except for the last little bit where she wanted me to hold her. Onyx was well-behaved, letting people stop to pet her.
Once he got a little bit of candy, Hayden was "tired of saying walking and saying trick or treat" so we headed home for hot chocolate, Spookley the Square Pumpkin and The Great Pumpkin. Good times all around!
The life and times of Jay & Jessica, Hayden & Lila, and of course, Onyx. Come see what we're up to!

Wine club
So some of my friends and I have a wine club, loosely modeled after another wine club I was part of :-)
We get together once a month, drink wine, eat, talk about books and Hollywood trash, eat and drink some more, and generally have an awesome time. We stuff ourselves, have "just one more glass", pick our favorites, make up words and laugh until we cry. In short, it's awesome :-)

Buddies
I hope they always get along like this. But if they don't, I have these pictures to prove they once did!
Whenever we go wake Lila up in the morning, or from a nap, Hayden wants to get in her bed with her. It's really precious. He loves her so much. You're always worried about how siblings will react, but Hayden is so loving and caring when she's upset, when she's crying, when she's hurt or sad. He sings to her, rubs her hair, brings her toys and talks to her. He really does have the biggest heart.
Hayden loves the bath, and was upstairs when I was giving Lila a bath the other night. He asked if he could get in and play, and they had a blast! Lila likes to chew the letters, and Hayden thought she'd really enjoy some bathtub drumming with chopsticks. And Onyx was there to lick all the water they splashed out of the tub.

Bye-bye!
Lila has learned to wave and say bye-bye! She does it when you leave the room, when she goes to bed, when she gets in the bath, when she leaves daycare and at the dinner table. She loves it!
Laughing baby
We had the camera at the table one night when Lila was particularly messy...and particularly giggly! She loves to be tickled and we caught a few good laughs on camera. Her laugh has already changed so much...she's growing up too fast :-(
Baked brie, the easy way
I hesitate to even call this a "recipe" because it's so simple. I LOVE baked brie, it's one of my very favorite appetizers. But I have no patience for puff pastry, phyllo dough, or the other things that make it fabulous. So I ran across this on Pinterest, and it seemed to good to be true.
8 oz can crescent roll dough
8 oz wheel of brie
2 T preserves (I used apricot)
1 egg
Bread/apples to serve with
Unroll the crescent dough and make two sections of squares (keep two triangles together). Push them a little to close the seams. Lay one square flat, and place unwrapped brie (minus the rind) in the middle. Top with the 2T preserves, spreading across. Take the other squares and place it on top of the preserves. Pinch it all the way around to seal. Brush the top with beaten egg.
Bake 22-24 minutes at 350 or until golden brown. Let cool so it can firm up a bit. Note: it's still good, even if you forget it's in the oven and 1/4 of the cheese oozes out the sides. True story.

Mushroom and artichoke dip
I needed a light, not spicy dip to go with Cabernet Savignon for my wine club a few weeks ago and this looked perfect. Next time, I'll cut the recipe in half (or even a fourth!) as it made a whole casserole dish of dip!!
1 tsp olive oil
2 cups sliced shitake mushrooms (4 oz)
1-6 oz package of pre-sliced portobellos, chopped
1/2 cup light mayo (I did half mayo, half sour cream)
1/4 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
2 T fresh parsley, chopped
1 tsp garlic powder (I'm always generous with the garlic)
1 tsp black pepper (has anyone ever actually measured pepper?)
3/4 tsp salt
dash of cayenne pepper
14oz can artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped
2-8 oz packages cream cheese
sliced baguette
*Also, the recipe didn't call for it, but I thought it was SCREAMING for parmesan. So I stirred some of that it, and sprinkled it on top.*
Preheat oven to 350. Coat a 2-qt casserole dish with cooking spray
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms; saute 5 mins or until tender. Combine mushrooms and remaining ingredients (except baguette), stirring until well blended. Spoon mixture into prepared dish, bake for 30 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
Serve with sliced baguette, toasted or not.
This was a HIT with the wine club, and I will def be making it again!

Tri-level Brownies
This is one of the most high-maintenance recipes I've done in awhile, but it was totally worth it! These brownies are rich and tasty, so they go a long way.
1 cup quick cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup butter, melted
This is the first layer. Preheat oven to 350. In a small bowl, stir in the above dry ingredients. Stir in butter, and press mixture into the bottom of an ungreased baking pan. Bake for 10 minutes.
1 egg
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/4 milk
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Beat egg with a fork; stir in granulated sugar, the flour, milk, melted butter, melted chocolate, vanilla and baking powder until smooth. Fold in chopped walnuts. Spread batter evenly over baked layer in pan. Bake about 25 minutes (mine was more like 35) or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Place on wire rack to cool while making top layer.
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate
2 tbls butter
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
walnut halves
Glaze is not my strong suit, but this came out well! In a medium saucepan, combine chocolate and butter, heat over low heat until melted. Stir in the powdered sugar and the vanilla. Stir in enough hot water (1 to 2 tablespoons) to make a mixture that is spreading consistency. Spread over brownies. Garnish with walnut halves. Cool in pan on wire rack; cut into bars.
These are VERY rich so you almost want to cut them into fudge-sized squares. You can always go back for more :-)

Spiced Caramel Apple Dip
This is a great, simple fall recipe that was a huge hit with my friends! It only takes a minute but tastes awesome.
8-oz package cream cheese, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp apple pie spice
pinch of salt
pinch of apple pie spice for topping
Cream together cream cheese and sugars, making sure they are well combined. Mix in spices, combine well. Top with sprinkle of apple pie spice (or cinnamon) and serve with apple slices.
That's it! It's sweet without being heavy, with just enough spice to remind you of fall. To keep the apples from browning, soak in Sprite or a similar lemon-lime flavored soda.

Probably inappropriate
But who cares, right?
On the way back from a party in Charlotte, we were less than 2 miles from home and this:
Hayden: Mommy I have to pee! It's starting to come out!
Me: Hayden can you hold it? We are almost home and there's no bathroom on the way.
Hayden: I can't, the seatbelt is in my way.
Me: You don't have to hold with your hands, just squeeze your booty and everything else down there really tight.
*short pause*
Hayden: Okay mommy, my butt is SO big the pee-pees won't come out!
I love this kid.

9 month check up
Lila had her nine-month check up today! This is a fun check up because there are no shots (other than the flu shot). She weighed in at 17.4 lbs and was a whopping 28 inches long. Now we know where all that food is going!! She gained nearly 2.5 inches from her six-month visit, and is holding steady at 70th percentile for height. She's still petite, in the 28th percentile for weight. And her head is right there in the middle at 43.7 cm. She got to play with the empty roll from the table-paper, but shows great resistance to being on her back and held down. My wiggle worm does not like to be restrained! Or changed, re-diapered, etc. Doc was glad she's sleeping through the night, using a cup, eating table food, etc. We go back in 30 days for her other flu shot (at her age, they split it into two doses) and then not until after her 1st birthday in January. Where does the time go??

9 months old!
Lila bean is growing too fast!
We took these pictures after her bath, before she could get cranky, so you can't see how long her hair is. But holy cow, she has so much of it!! She is a sassy little girl, who does not like it when she doesn't get her way! She is learning to use her voice, so on the way to school we have lots of squeals and screeches and giggles.
And for once, mom got to make a cameo since dad was taking the pics!

Happy 2nd birthday Reid!
We went to Charlotte for Reid's 2nd birthday and her Minnie's Bowtique party!
The weather was so nice, so we spent most of the day outside. The kids had a blast! Hayden made some new friends with the girls that were there, and Lila practiced her gnawing skills on the furniture.
Reid and Lily were both dressed as Minnie Mouse, and Reid was so excited about cake that we did it a little early. Whatever the birthday girl wants!!
Make a wish!
Hayden enjoyed his cake and ice cream at the table with his new lady friends, while Lila enjoyed sitting on the sidewalk and playing in the pine needles. Win-win!

Happy Birthday Jay!
My sweet, hardworking husband turns 28 today! The first birthday we celebrated together was in 2004, at Ft. Stewart, with a half-sized chocolate cake with chocolate icing in his barracks room. And it was a week late, because he was in the field on his birthday. Funny to think how much has changed since that first year. Love you sir!

Bath time!
Bath time is a far more enjoyable event in our house with Miss Lila now that she's out of the baby tub! I think she just didn't like the confinement, or maybe the position she had to sit in. But now that she's free to roam the tub, she is a happy camper!
She LOVES her duckies, and the foam letters that sometimes make their way back to the kids' bathroom from mommy's tub. Hayden prefers the garden tub, so most of the toys are now in my bathroom.
Her hair is still super curly, and getting longer and longer!

A tough lesson
While we were at the fair last weekend, Hayden was DYING to play the game to win a fish. So we obliged, paying $5 for bucket of ping pong balls that he threw aimlessly at glass bowls filled with dirty, colored water. About halfway through the bucket, he hit a bowl! Which means he won a fish. We are not huge fans of fish-as-pets, but we couldn't deny him his prize!
Immediately, he set out to pick a name. "Hayden", "Mommy" and "Ironman" were ruled out before settling on Nemo. Within five minutes, he had asked, "Can Nemo ride the roller coaster with me?", "Can Nemo take a bath with me?", "Do we eat Nemo since he is a fish?" We reminded him to be careful carrying the bag with the fish, since he insisted upon carrying it himself.
He fell asleep on the way home so we took him up to bed for a nap. While he was sleeping, we transferred the fish to a bowl. Well. We tried. And by we, I mean I made a HUGE mistake and Jay came to the rescue (as usual). He told me to poke a hole in the bag to let the water drain, then then put the fish in the bowl. Well. I cut a hole in the bottom, and the fish promptly fell in the sink. And then down the garbage disposal. I yelled for Jay to come in there, who MacGyvered two spoons to rescue Nemo from the bowels of our drain. Gross. We put the little guy in his bowl, and my blood pressure slowly went down.
An hour later, I came into the kitchen only to find poor Nemo floating atop the bowl. Clearly the events of the day had traumatized him to the point of death. It was 8:45 and I couldn't bear the thought of Hayden waking up to a dead fish. I threw on some shoes and flew out the door to get to Petsmart before they closed at 9.
I picked up a more suitable fish bowl (than my short, round vase), some rocks, some food and asked the lady for a fish. At this point, I would like to point out that NO ONE mentioned adding water conditioner to combat the chlorine in tap water, which I later learned might be helpful in keeping fish alive. This is why I have dogs. I paid for Nemo #2 and got home to get him settled in his new bowl. After he was comfortably swimming, I went upstairs to bed.
Hayden woke up around 10:30 wanting a snack so we went downstairs for some cereal and a little Batman. Hayden suddenly remembered Nemo, and asked, "Where's my fish?" I told him in the kitchen, and he went in to see him. He came back in the living room and said, "Mommy, my fish has died." I couldn't believe it! He barely lived an hour!! Then he broke my heart with a quivering lip, asking, "Is it because I dropped him in his bag?" and burst into tears. I assured him this was not his fault, and we talked about fish heaven. He seemed to be okay with it, and went to sleep.
The next morning, he came downstairs and said, "My fish is still dead. I think he just needs more food". I explained fish heaven again, at which point he wanted to know how many fish were in fish heaven with him. I told him it was probably a whole lot, and that Nemo was happy. A minute later, he called me into the dining room. He was laying on his side with his eyes wide open and said, "Look! I look like my fish." I took his humor as a sign that he had progressed to the acceptance stage of grief (and proof that he's my child). We gave Nemo a proper burial in the toilet, because "all drains lead to the ocean like in Finding Nemo".
So Nemo died (twice) and Hayden doesn't seem to be too upset about it. We might get him a betta fish, or we might just stick with the two dogs that we can pet, love on, give treats to and toss the ball for. A tough lesson for a three year old, indeed.

Dixie Classic Fair
We finally made it to the Dixie Classic Fair! We kept meaning to, and it just never worked out. But finally we had both kids ready to go and made it to Winston. Unfortunately, we went on the night that kids rode all kid rides for one price, so there were a MILLION people there. But we had fun nonetheless!
Well, here they don't appear to be having fun. But they did! We rode rides and played games and ate...and ate and ate. Hot dogs and fries and pizza and fried twinkies and fried oreos and cheesesteaks and lemonade. Phew! Really, we go for the food.
Hayden rode some spinny dragons, a few kiddie coasters, the Haunted House, and went through the House of Mirrors. He even went down the corkscrew slide all by himself! He's getting so big. Next year he'll probably be able to ride some of the bigger kid rides, since he was just barely under the height requirements for them.
Here he is with Nemo (#1). He was the proudest little boy at the fair!

Cobbler? Cake? You decide
So I tried out a new recipe last night, but you'd hardly call it a recipe. It was more of a quick toss and bake. Hayden is of course, a huge fan of anything a) going into the oven and b) dessert related. So here's what we did:
I sliced up three fresh apples and tossed them in a greased 9x13. I sprinkled some cinnamon, and brown sugar. Then we poured a package of yellow cake mix on top. It was nothing pretty, but it already smelled delicious! Then I cut up a stick of butter and tossed it on top. It went into the oven. After about 15 minutes, I noticed some dry spots so I sprinkled about 1/4 cup of water on them. After 35 minutes, we had a delicious smelling dessert! It turns out to be more cobbler-like than cake-like. This is good news for me, as Jay has been asking me to make peach cobbler for 7+ years. I may have found a Jessica-friendly way to do it!
