Baseball stars

Last week I was so excited the end of July was finally here. For two months I have been waiting to go on a field trip with Hayden's class...to a daytime Dash game! It was a perfect summer day for a ball game and I love going on field trips with his class.

We got the troop of 30+ kids (Hayden's class of five year olds and the after school program) inside and to our seats with relatively few speed bumps. No sooner than we sat down did at least six boys need to go to the bathroom.

The hand dryers proved to be fun for all!

When we came back, a lady's program caught my eye. I asked her to see it, and sure enough, it was my family on there!

I was shocked! The great people at Keiger do the printing for The Dash and put my sweet boys on the cover of the July 30th program! Hayden was a little embarrassed and then super proud. He ran around showing it to all his friends while I went around to find more. Hayden was really more excited about the players and coaches' info inside but it was a great surprise for both of us.

We were lucky to watch such an exciting game because a baseball game is LONG for little bottoms and brains. But the kids did great and had a blast.

I so rarely get to spend good quality alone time with this little guy so I was really grateful for the opportunity to hang out with him. He's so smart and so curious and such a fun little boy. I am lucky to be his mom.

We tracked down Bolt at the end of the game and showed him Hayden's picture on the program.

Final score: Dash beats the Frederick Keys 12-2!

Big girl

Recently Lila started climbing out of her crib. Naturally we decided a big girl bed was in order. This was a big step for her and for me. Not my baby anymore? I'm not ready!

But she was. She watched in wonder as we dismantled the crib and put together this new big girl bed for her. She arranged her babies and animals a dozen times the first night. She lay there, excited and got up about three times the first night before finally settling in.

Now? She's put herself to bed for a nap by herself since day two and for bedtime with a quick kiss and "ni-night momma". It's hard. Watching her independent spirit unfold before my very eyes is both wonderful and heartbreaking. But through my foggy, sleep deprived memories of Hayden's transition to a big boy bed, I am thankful for one easy sleeper!

Ham delights

These are likely my favorite appetizer and party food!

As you might be able to tell from the cookbook, I've made it a few times!

A first or two

I was totally planning to serve leftovers for dinner. I cooked every night this week so the fridge is full of Tupperware and ziploc. Jay worked Friday night so we decided to take Saturday easy (lazy) but I did do seven loads of laundry.

When he was up and moving around he asked if I wanted to go out to dinner. I was indifferent but he wanted to go somewhere decent so we decided to call Kabuto and see if they were packed or if we could get in. I was shocked that woth GHOE and furniture market and BBQ festival that there was anywhere to eat in NC! They got us a 7 o'clock and I set about getting little people ready.

As I was curling my hair I had a crazy idea. Both Lila and Jay had late afternoon naps and Hayden begged all day to do something fun. What if we took them to a movie after dinner? Lila has never been to one in the theater and Hayden hasn't seen one in ages. Why not?

We arrived at the restaurant and were literally seated immediately. Never happened. I took it as a good sign. I took Lila to the bathroom on what would be no less than eleven trips during dinner. Two year olds are tricky. We ordered and waited for the show.

It didn't occur to me how scary the big fire might be to Lila. Hayden loved it at her age. Lila did NOT love it. She cried. And cried. She finally got it under control and we were all able to move on.

She loved the steak and chicken and rice so I guess it made up for the earlier terror. They accidentally brought out birthday ice cream where there was no birthday so my kids were the lucky recipients of a sweet treat!

We left dinner and headed to the movie which was close by and I tried to prepare Lila for sitting for 90 minutes with the promise of goodies and fun. For four of us with large popcorn and drinks it was about $30. If we're being honest, that's pretty cheap for a family outing!

We went to see The Book of Life and it was pretty good. It kept Lila's attention for the most part and had good music and great animation. It was different than the Disney movies we usually watch but we all liked it. Lila really liked the pig, the popcorn and dancing in her seat. Towards the end she got a little restless and bounced between me, Jay and her seat but otherwise did pretty well. I'm ready for another go at dinner and a movie!

Love

That smile. That shy, almost embarrassed smile when he looks up and realized I changed it to one of his shows because dad went to bed and mom is reading. That smile is why I became a mom.

Coincidentally, that same smile is why I fell in love with his dad in the first place.

The girl who fell from the sky

"But when a person fakes happy, it has edges. Regular people may not see, but the people who count, they can see the edges and lines where your smile ends and the real you, the sadness (me) or the anger (Grandma) begins.

Let's be honest

So I'll be honest for a minute. The real honesty.

I'm a mom who judges other moms.

That's right, I said it. It's not pretty but it's true. When I see a kid out with no hat and it's 40 degrees. When I see a mom smoking. Kids clearly not in their seatbelts properly. I judge because it's not safe.

But that's not all.

I judge when I see a mom yelling. Ignoring. On her phone instead of watching them at the pool. Wearing brand new clothes and shoes while her kids have on too small clothes and ratty shoes. The way I hear her talk to them out of frustration. The way she talks about their dad to them. The way she swats away little hands, reaching for affection.

When she posts pictures of her kids doing things that are funny to her, but unsafe to me. The complaints she has about perfectly healthy kids that other people would kill for, die for. For letting them skip naps because she has errands to run, and then later complaining about how impossible they were.

A few weeks ago I consciously decided to stop judging. Because it is none of my business. Because I'm not their mom. But mainly, because all it does is make me bitter, annoyed, and several other negative emotions. And above all, because I have no right to judge. Because motherhood is hard.

Some of us have a village. A group of people we can call on to help with dinner, laundry and babysitting; a group we can call to vent and they'll tell us we aren't crazy, we aren't selfish, we aren't terrible. We are just tired.

But some of us don't. Some of is are alone. Some of us are fighting medical, financial, professional, personal, emotional battles. Some of us are at the end of our rope. Some of us are on top of the world, while others are on the last straw.

Judging her does me no good; it does her no good; it does her kids no good. If I'm really that concerned, I should step in and offer a hand, a shoulder, a back to help carry her load. An ear, a tissue, a a loving slap in the face to snap her out of it. If I'm not that concerned, I should make the world a better place by not gossiping about the mother I just say and know nothing about.

The thing is, I actually don't care. Cloth vs. disposable? Bottle vs. breast? Pacifier or no? Your decisions are not my decisions. They don't affect me.

Have I never yelled at my kids? Have I never let them eat junk in front of the tv instead of a healthy meal at the table? I've stayed home, I've worked. I've done it alone, with a village and everything in between. Good days, bad days; perfect days, impossible days; moments of panic and moments of euphoria.

Once I decided to stop judging moms, I stopped judging myself. An unintended side effect, giving myself a break. Because I shouldn't care that someone sees me letting my kid eat Froot Loops in the car on the way to school. I have two beautiful, healthy, happy, smart children. They love fiercely, they make silly faces, they color and draw; they fight over a cup holder, throw an occasional tantrum and always always try to stay up a few minutes past bedtime.

What if we all stopped judging the moms who parent differently? The moms who are having a bad day. The moms who are just trying to keep it together. What if we let ourselves watch tv instead of folding laundry? What if we did something for ourselves once in awhile, since we spend so much of our time giving everything we have to our families?

It's just an idea.

I <3 Salem

Surely you can see why.

The peace that surrounds this place is pretty much magic.

The good stuff

One of my friends challenged me on Facebook to list three things a day for five days that reflected the positives in my life. By nature I'm a pretty positive person so it wasn't hard. But I would kind of like to keep it up!

1. Brown butter pecan creamer by Bailey's. Yum.

2. Charlie Hunnam as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. Yum.

3. Weather that feels almost cold enough for crock pot chicken and dumplings. Yum.

Good days, bad days and everything in between

Life is such a roller coaster. Yesterday I was in a SUCH a foul mood. Nothing went right. Everything was annoying or irritating or extra work just to DEAL with it. Without any real good reason, any warning. I went for a Salem stroll around 3pm to get some air and a caffeinated beverage. What would have been really great turned sour when I realized I had SEVEN mosquito bites to show for my stroll. Well. Suck.

But I was determined to make it better. So I planned dinner in my head, reserved a Redbox movie and headed home at 5. Traffic was relatively clear and I stopped for a movie and wine. Came home to an excited Hayden and a puzzle-making Lila, made dinner and sent two kids to bed early for bad behavior. Good news? We got to start the movie at a decent time. Jay fell asleep but I (for once) stayed up and watched all of it (Noah).

This morning I woke up with a much better attitude, because a bad mood can't last forever. It was hard to leave my sleeping husband but my kids were in a fun mood so we headed out the door in a flood of giggles and fun.

Being a wife and a mom is hard. Doing it while working full time and commuting 30 minutes to an hour each way is even harder. I don't get as much time with my family as I would like. I love my job, I love my students, I love what I do. But balancing it all is tough. And let's not forget my friends, whose calls I miss and texts I get hours after they were sent. Time for myself? It's limited in all aspects. So sometimes, I just need to have a bad day. It makes the good days better. I told someone yesterday, I'm a generally positive person and try to find the good in most days. So when I have a bad day I feel like it hits me harder than the average bear. The trick is to remind myself it's OKAY to have a bad day and be a cranky pants and feel like the world is out to get me (it's not).

Sweet face

Strong are thy walls...

Definitely my single favorite image of the student center so far.

The first pitch

Every year our staff in the Admissions office gets the generous use of Keiger's box seats or party deck for one night at a Dash game. The perk of being a corporate sponsor for that game is that one lucky guest gets to throw out the first pitch. This year, Hayden was elected to represent Salem and throw out the first pitch.

Seriously, have you ever seen a kid so happy? He practiced for DAYS on end and could not wait to go to "the dashes game". We barely made it on time thanks to some traffic but when we got there it was all worth it. The only downside was that Hayden spent the week thinking that he was pitching the whole game.

Hayden: So the dashes don't have enough pitchers and they need me to pitch?
Me: No Hayden, you just get to throw out the first pitch. It's really special.
Hayden: Well if they need me I don't mind pitching the whole game. I can do that.

The kids had an absolute blast. They ate hot dogs and beans and chips and cookies, got new Dash hats and posters and even watched a little of the game. We stayed the WHOLE time, until after 10, and they were champs. Love these memories!

Civic duty

I love taking my kids to vote. This year we have a primary, a runoff and general elections so it's a great year to teach them about our responsibility and privilege to vote!

Hayden: Mom who did we vote for?
Me: Well Hayden we keep our vote a secret, we don't have to tell anyone.
Hayden: Mom. You don't have to keep it a secret from me; you're my son. *pause* Wait, that's not right. I'm YOUR son.

I dodged that question and instead explained to him what a runoff was. He seemed appeased.

Summer fun

My kids are such a cheap date!

This is Lila's cheese face. You might recognize it because it's eerily similar to Hayden's creepy face, reserved for Santa and school photos.

Pool party

For her 8th birthday, Zoe wanted a pool party. The kids are recently obsessed with the water and Hayden is getting braver and braver when it comes to the deep end. We just bought him a new life jacket and he feels like a big kid now!

He also got a haircut "that sticks up" (a mohawk) so he is on top of the world.

He loves jumping in the water from the side of the pool and loves being able to "see the feets" while he's under the water with his goggles. He's a hoot. Neither one wanted to get out for pizza and cupcakes but they ate fast and got right back in.

This baby girl is fearless and loves swimming in her "wife jacket". Especially with her daddy!

Back to the zoo!

So, we love the zoo. We have family passes and try to go as often as we can. The kids love the animals (so do I) and we're almost certainly guaranteed a good night's sleep after a day at the zoo. The last few times we've gone I've tried to leave the camera at home and leave my phone in the bag and just enjoy the moment instead of documenting everything.

But this weekend was different! July 20th was Visitor Appreciation Day, which meant the attractions that were normally a few dollars a head were free. Jay had an unexpected Sunday off so it worked out perfectly. Hayden had really been wanting to see the Rio 4-D experience and everything is better free.

We started off in North America. Lila loves the polar bear, Patches, and Hayden loves to watch the sea lions swim at the underwater viewing area. Lila loves all things bear, really, so when we got to the bears and they were actually moving around, she lost it. Overjoyed.

We saw the alligators and the turtles and the Sonora Desert but these kids really wanted to get to Jungle Junction! (That's where all the free stuff was) We grabbed a snack in one of the cafes and headed into the Rio movie. Thanks to the drizzly weather early in the day, things weren't too too busy so we didn't have to wait long.

Rio was really cool because a) the kids are currently obsessed with the sequel and b) it was a totally interactive experience. There were puffs of air blowing behind your ear, things flapping at your feet, birds flying at your face, the smell of sunscreen and even a little spray of the ocean! Hayden loved it, Lila tolerated it (in my lap).

Since the carousel was free, we rode it all together. Lila always picks the Polar Bear; Hayden wanted to be beside her and that left the dolphin in the middle for me. They wanted to ride it over and over but we said one was enough. There was more to see! So we headed over to the Bugs exhibit.

This was so cool because the bugs were all giant so you could see all their moving parts. Hayden loved it; Lila hated it of course. But they learned a lot! Hayden has a recent obsession with scorpions so it was awesome for him to get to see a giant one. He was a little worried that the enormous spider was going to come to life, come down off the web and get him. So he was cautious in taking a picture with it.

Somehow, we have missed the Aviary on our last 1000 trips to the zoo. I can't remember ever having gone in it in the past four years. We stopped to see the flamingos, which was a huge hit with the kids. Inside,we saw pineapples growing, a ton of amazing birds and some that were hiding from us!

By this point in the afternoon the kiddos were running out of steam but they won't leave the zoo without a trip to see the elephants, because they know they're my favorite! This time, we were there at the same time as the elephant keeper so we got to see a mother and daughter up close and personal, and even doing a few tricks for treats!

It was a beautiful day well spent! We saw our baby baboons and the gorillas and a quick stop at the zebras and giraffes before we finally headed out. The biggest bonus? Lila rode in the stroller for the first time in over a year. Parent win! She loves the zoo and loves to walk but gets tired of walking pretty quickly, doesn't want to ride in the stroller and doesn't want Jay to carry her. So that means a long day for mom. This time, Jay told her "you're riding in your stroller, end of story" and she went for it!

Thanks for taking it easy on mom, Lila!

Hayden's Preschool Graduation

So my little dude is five. He's done with preschool. He's heading to kindergarten. Some days I'm okay with it, some days I'm super excited, some days I'm terrified. He's only FIVE. How can I send him out into the world? With fifth graders?! Complete. Terror.

Then there's the logistics. He's not riding the bus. So I have to navigate the drop off line. With Lila learning she's going to one place, he's going to another. I feel like August is going to be a disaster. But before that...

He had the most precious preschool graduation!

It was held at a little church multipurpose room out in Oak Ridge and it was adorable.

The kids all had a chance to tell Ms. Marsha what they wanted to be when they grow up. Hayden wants to be a Sergeant in the Army and save the world. They got to draw pictures and say why they wanted to do what they did. During graduation, Hayden told Ms. Marsha he changed his mind, and that he also wanted to be an artist. In the Army. Such a wide variety of interests!

They sang adorable songs and wore their adorable caps and gowns and got wee little diplomas and it was amazing. I cried less than I thought I would. They came to hug the parents and gave the dads a picture and the moms a flower and said why WE were special. It was precious. I love him.

He was excited to see us and his nana and Erin & Eric and his cousins and grandma. It was a special day.

"Letter to my daughter" -Maya Angelou

"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution."

Is there, was there a more brilliant woman than Maya? If so, I don't know her. Her popularity stems from her grace, her poise, her ability to touch your soul with a single paragraph. To get to the deepest part of you with a mere few words. She is bold but not brash, compassionate and not condescending, brilliant and brave. The world will surely feel her loss for years to come. But she certainly left it a better place.

Bend, Not Break: A Life in Two Worlds

"When in doubt, always err on the side of generosity."

"Sometimes in life, out of the clear blue sky comes a vicious storm. We must seek out the shelter of a cave in order to survive. We might feel as though we'll never escape the dark crevasse. But there is always hope."

"...sometimes there are very simple steps we can take to overcome our fears, or just minimize them enough so that we can function."

I'm really enjoying this book. I love a memoir and even though this one is a little tech heavy, I like it. Quick read.

Weekend fun

Our weekends lately are nuts. They're supposed to be: the sun is out, summer is here and we're enjoying all of it!

Friday was fairly calm, with dinner at home and hanging out, watching movies. Saturday Jay had to work in the morning so I took my time getting up, making beds, doing laundry and making breakfast. Lila likes to sleep in on the weekends (she gets that from me) but Hayden doesn't so my days start early. It's nice to have that little time with him before anyone else is up and when the dogs are still calm. Ish.

The weather was promising, so we went to Emerald Pointe for some fun in the sun. We were later met by Aaran, Tyler and Carter, with Erin and Ryan arriving later. The kids had a blast. We did the wave pool for awhile, where Lila is less terrified than Hayden. Baby pool, where Lila can slide and swing. Then Soak Zone, where the boys can play with water guns. This is where Lila threw her newest "tantrum", the silent treatment. She doesn't realize yet that it doesn't hurt mommy, and I'm sure not telling her. The downside of the day at the water park is that mom forgets to reapply HER sunscreen so I left with a pretty solid burn. But the kids didn't!

Quick trip to the grocery store, then home for the kids to nap. I whipped up a few sides, woke up an angry Lila and we were out the door to Eric's for a mini cookout. Lila jumped, Hayden played, Zoe tried to put makeup on Hayden, dogs ate the leftover burgers and brats...all in a day's work. We got home around midnight and crashed.

Jay left for work early Sunday, and the kids both slept super late. Hayden got up around 11:30 and Lila was down until 12:30. Hayden and I went to Reidsville for baby Sarah's baby shower (he's been dying to go to one FOREVER) and he asked questions the whole way there. He has to know all the things, which I understand. So I answered as many as I could. On the way we passed the cemetery where my dad is buried so Hayden asked if we could stop and see him. I told him we would on the way back as we were, of course, already running late. We got to the shower and it was so good to see Sarah and her family! Baby Silas is sure to be spoiled with all the love he can stand. We had a great time and stayed almost til the end, when Hayden was restless.

We headed home and stopped by to see his Papaw. He had a lot of questions, death and health related. I can't get over what he retains and remembers and is able to explain, at age 5. I hope he carries a lot of memories of his Papaw with him, since he didn't get much time with him. Lila won't really have those memories, but we can share ours.

It seems like the weekend is over before it begins!

There's a lot I've missed

Sometimes I do a big "catch up" on the blog. Sometimes I don't. I'm hoping to do that soon. But not today.

What I've missed in my LIFE:

*talking on the phone. I used to talk to Stephanie, Liz or Sara on the phone at length, at least twice a week. I miss that. It was before two kids, two dogs and triple the chaos.

*updating the blog. You see, I don't do it for my throngs of readers. Initially, I did it for my grandma. She wanted to know what we were doing in Germany and how we were. And I wanted to remember everything about being pregnant with Hayden. So I was VERY good at it for many years. I'm trying, folks. Because I LOVE to go back to 2009 and remember what it was like when Jay came home, when I took a trip with the girls, my new fave piece of pottery, what I was reading.

*reading books. I am a reader; I always have been. I would devour novels in a single sitting. I would ask people for recommendations and devour and ask for more. I found things I liked, things I didn't, but I loved to read. I have 50 books sitting around my house, unread, waiting to be devoured.

*cooking new things. Y'all. I am in a rut. When Pinterest was first a thing, I was making new recipes every other day. Trying this out. Testing that out. Ruling that out completely. Now I make the same boring 11 things.

*scrapbooking. My other love. I have all the stuff. I have albums and pages and layouts and supplies. I need time, and I need pictures. End of list. Get it together, Rogers.

*my Army wives. Specifically, about seven of you. The rest are just noise. And drama. And negativity. But the lucky 7 are pretty amazing and I wish you were all in one place. And that that place was my house.

These are things I need to find time for, make time for, realize their absolute necessity in my life. I'm finding, the more I delete from my life that's non-essential, the happier I am. The more negative people, time-wasting things and downright stupidity I can remove from the radar, the clearer the picture is.

Typical

Last night Hayden won the award for most amazing child with this:

"Mom. I'm sorry to interrupt you. But I figured out what I want for my snack."

Beautiful, right? Mr. Manners.

Today he followed up with his in the car:

"Can we get to the program here?"

Aaaaand he's back to just being five.

A Day in the Life

I thought about saying, "I don't know where the time goes," but I know exactly where it goes.

5am: Jay's alarm goes off. He gets up and gets ready and out the door, dropping a kiss on my head and sometimes asking me to turn on the light.

6am: My alarm goes off. Sometimes I get up. There's getting-ready things to be done. Kids to be dressed. Sometimes, Hayden comes in my room between the alarms and hops into bed saying, "Can I sleep with you for a minute?" and I've yet to find a good reason to say no.

Get ready. Feed the dogs. Feed the kids. Let the dogs out. Get the things packed for the day. Find the keys. Find the shoes. Tie the shoes. "No mommy, the zebra shoes. I DO IT. Mommy help."

7am: In the car. Adjust the temperature 11 times. Drive in traffic. House-highway-interstate-highway-three turns and a right. Daycare. Out of the car, in the door, grab the booster seat, bring the extra clothes for she-who-forgets-to-potty. Grab a tissue because "momma I got the snots". Down the hall. "I open the door!" drop off with kisses or sometimes sneak out like a ninja. Sign in. Down the hall. Sign in. Three extra hugs and kisses for Ellie, Braxton and Savannah, because I've yet to find a good reason to say no. "Have a great day, be a listener, be a good friend". Out the door.

8am: In the car. Back roads-back roads-highway-highway. Always traffic because people don't know how to merge. Exit 5D. Left, left, left. Park.

8:30: My day "begins".

Emails, phone calls, letters, lists. Meeting. Lists. Check off lists. A new idea. Remember to finish the old idea. Lunch or gym or Netflix? Stop suddenly to admire the landscaping of this beautiful place, and to remember why I love my job every day. Compare that to why I hated my job every day. Winner every time.

5pm: In the car. Two rights-highway-highway-interstate-merge. Less traffic than this morning. Right-left-right-right-left-left. Park. Unload all the things that make my car a mess.

In the door. "Mommy you got something for me?" "MOMMY'S HOME" with two pint-sized Rogers and two four-legged circuses barreling towards me at the door. Kiss on the head and how was your day?

At 5:30 my evening "begins".

Dinner dishes laundry tea party cars bath time story time sing my songs momma, do the Salem song bed time for one. News cartoons Jeopardy clean the bathroom what are you taking for lunch tomorrow? Stop and realize the dishes can wait. One more story. Ten minutes of peace with my husband before Hayden realizes he needs help with the toothpaste. Story. Sing me the Salem song. Hugs kisses Eskimos butterflies can you sleep with me for a minute?

8:30: Do I finally get to have adult conversation? I do! While I fold and wash and scrub, and pet and scratch the furry one with his tail thumping on the floor. Leave the phones in my purse. Talk about which house we'd pick on "Buying Alaska" or why I would never want to hunt a moose. What kind of gun is that?

Shower lotion hair dryer moisturizer when did I change these sheets? Lock the doors. Set the alarms. Barricade the steps so no more shoes get chewed up.

Spent my day as wife mom Assistant Dean of Admissions. But now I'm just Jessica, Jess, the girl he met in middle school. He's silly and makes me laugh. Dogs are barking because there's a noise outside. Turn the fan up, it's hot. Close my eyes. Tomorrow is a new day.

It's busy, it's messy, it's anything but perfect. It's never the same day twice. It's flawed it's loud it's chaos. But it's mine.

Hmm

I miss my dad. Today I just wanted to call and talk to him and this is when it sucks. Not birthdays or holidays but just regular Wednesdays when I want to talk about sports and traffic and the world.

Hayden, on Easter: "I think Jesus became invisible. That's how he went up to heaven when they moved that stone."

Sugarland

"I don't want to, if you don't want to..."

Sugarland came on as I pulled into work today. Took me back to our first concert, Kenny Chesney and Sugarland in 2007. Before he left for his second deployment, his first to Afghanistan. Before Hayden, before fifteen months of agony, before Dave died. Some days, I'd give anything to be back there. Before PTSD. Before two kids. Before the sadness.

But we can't do that. So we pick up and carry our memories with us.

Today

Our life is admittedly crazy. Two kids. Three dogs. Two full time jobs between two full time parents. We are busy. We run around and fall into bed exhausted at the end of the day. We wake up bleary eyed, stumbling to the bathroom or downstairs to quiet a barking dog. And we chose all of it.

But every once in awhile, I get a rare break from crazy. Jay works Sunday now with his switch to first shift, so he's out the door at 5am. Hayden climbs into my bed around 6 and asks when we can get up. Today, Lila is sleeping in. The dogs have been fed and are outside. So Hayden and I are in the bed watching Frozen. Again. Because it makes is both happy. He's pretty easy to please. And I'm grateful for a little time with my oldest baby, who is strangely not a baby anymore.

Yet. Another. Snow day.

Well I'm about done with winter. Yesterday we had an event on campus and right at noon we walked out to sleet, freezing rain, and everything else you find in a wintry mix. Miserable and cold. The drive home was actually fine. But I made the mistake of waiting until after dark to drive my mom home.

We left my house around 8.  We came up on a car with his hazards on near a bridge. As we got closer, the bridge looked like an intense game of Frogger. Eleven cars wrecked on a bridge about twice the size of my driveway. Since this was only about a mile from my house, I turned right back around.

I woke up at 5 and kept checking and checking to see if Salem would be closed. Finally they called a two hour delay. I looked outside and saw the sheet of ice on my driveway, and my neighborhood and decided it was not worth risking the drive. Luckily we had power this time.

When the roads melted and dried after lunch, we headed out to Target to pick up Frozen (ironically). Dinner was ready in the crock pot when we all got home so we filled our bellies and watched Ana and Elsa save the world. Lila was under the weather Sunday and Monday so it was nice to spend a quiet day with her. And her snuggles!

Tomorrow is supposed to be near 60.  Get it together North Carolina.

Snowmageddon: Part 2

So we packed a few bags and headed to Eric's. The kids were so excited to see their cousins! They played and wrestled and sounded like a herd of elephants, but they had a blast! Ice cream and popcorn and movies and bunk bed? Heaven!

Although, Lila is only a good sleeper in her own bed. Not anywhere else. Which made for a super long night sharing a futon with her. But we were warm!

We got up and hung out a bit before heading back to our house. Jay had stayed with the dogs in our freezing cold house and needed rescuing! We went home and took him out to lunch, making plans to save our freezer food. After Mexican food, we picked up 5 bags of ice.

We pulled into the driveway and I saw our porch light on! Power! I ran inside to start the washer and dishwasher, bid adieu to the dogs and headed to my mom's with the ice we no longer needed. Victory!

Her house was freezing so we saved her food and then packed up to come here. It was so nice to see my city returning to civilization! Stop lights and working railroad arms and power to gas stations, oh my!

We were lucky to escape with just two days of mild inconveniences. Back to life as normal!

Snowmageddon

The power is out. We went to bed Thursday night to the sounds of sleet and freezing rain falling heavily outside. We awoke to a dark house and neighborhood. The power went out once and came back on, but went off for good around 3am. Salem sent the closed email at 6 am so Hayden and I bundled up under the covers and went back to sleep for a few hours. We got up and ate breakfast, fed the dogs and retreated back to the somewhat warm bed. We played a few rounds of Cars Monopoly Jr and were on our third game of "Who Shook Hook?" when Lila woke up. At noon.

We had a little lunch, of what we had in the pantry and fruit bowl. We cuddled back up under the covers and used what was left of my laptop battery to watch Shrek: The Final Chapter. That took us right to nap time and after I put the kids down, I headed outside. I wanted to be able to go out since it was just slushy and not icy. So I set out to shovel the driveway.

What a job! 40 minutes and an outfit change later it was done. I felt super accomplished and decided to brave the cold water for a shower. To my surprise, we still had hot water!! I took a super fast shower just in case the water was a fluke but man it felt good! We packed up after nap time and went out in search of hot food and civilization.

We grabbed some food and made our way around town without many working traffic lights. We decided to stay with my brother once Lila's lips turned blue...

Busy

Is an understatement. The house is a mess, laundry everywhere. Work is great but time consuming. Hayden and Lila are growing at lightning speed. One day, I'll have time to really update.

Oh hey 2014

So I didn't even tell 2013 goodbye. Hayden and I went to bed around 1030, Lila at her usual 630 and Jay was at work. It was nice to wake up in a new year, but my new attitude took about six more days to get here. Must've been coming via UPS.

Work is the good kind of crazy and so are my kids. Lila turns two next week and it happened before I could blink.

We have a new puppy, Gunner, that prefers me to anyone else. That's a first. Cold but no snow. Blah blah.

Happy New Year
